OSCC Newsletter OSCC Newsletter October 2008 MyGOSSCON 2008 – November 5-6 The MyGOSSCON 2008 is back this year on the 5th November and 6th November 2008 held at Putrajaya International Convention Centre, (PICC) Putrajaya. This conference will be officiated by the Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia, Y. Bhg Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan. The Open Source Competency Centre (OSCC) has successfully completed Phase I of the Malaysian Public Sector OSS Master Plan Programme, which focused on Laying the Foundation and Early Adoption stages. The programme is currently in Phase II - Accelerated Adoption stage, which targets to further accelerate OSS adoption in Public Sector. The Malaysian Government Open Source Software Conference (MyGOSSCON) is an event held to support the Phase II - Accelerated Inside Adoption. Following the success of the first MyGOSSCON in 2007, this popular event is back again this year to bring you the latest trends in OSS. ● MyGOSSCON 2008 A host of local and international speakers will present 35 papers covering ● Latest OSS Adoption global trends, technology, education, success stories and many more Trend interesting topics. The OSS Showcase Exhibition will have about 40 booths ● Linux Certified displaying various OSS solutions available for both public and private Administrator 01 sector users. ● OSS Case Study Awards 2008 OSCC Newsletters covers the latest issues and updates related to Open Source Software in Malaysia. OSCC Newsletter OSCC Newsletter October 2008 Other Highlights Linux Certified Administrator 01 (Continued) The increase of OSS adoption have led to a substantial need to increase the number of personnel with relevant OSS skills in the Public Sector. The Certified Linux Administrator 01 (CLA01) is the main certification for Linux Administrators who need to install and maintain enterprise solutions using Linux and its administrative tools. Resources The certification path as shown requires the candidates to do a OSS Implementation practical and written test. This will be followed by a report on the Guidelines candidates participation of an OSS related project. Full details of the certification can be found at the OSCC portal. Submission of synopsis for proposed paper and speaker biodata

+ Please note that presentation must be able to fit 25 minutes speaking slot, including Q&A

Upon acceptance of paper, speaker are to submit:

o Updated biodata with photo
o Presentation materials in not more than 5 MB. Format being ODP or PDF only

Evaluation criteria

1. Originality
Topics must be unique in perspective and viewpoint or way of doing something.

2. Timeliness and Interest
Topics must contain new and relevant material.

3. Educational Value
An objective presentation that meets the educational needs of the audience is optimal to enhancing the credibility of the speaker, the speaker’s employer and the conference.

4. Talks containing sales pitches will NOT be considered and may be removed even if synopsis submission was accepted.
Notification of acceptance

*** Accepted applications will be notified and all presentation materials must be submitted by the specified date. Please be aware of the following:

1. Reference Materials are Required
Our audience appreciates receiving supporting documentation to enhance their conference experience and serve as a reference when they return to the office. (If you rely on live demonstrations, your reference materials will be an outline of the demonstration with key reference points.)

2. 100% Adherence to NO COMMERCIALISM Policy
The presentations at MyGOSSCON are NOT the appropriate place for promoting your company, product, service or solution.

3. No Substitutions
Speaker and panelist substitutions are not allowed, except in the case of an emergency. In the event that a speaker cannot fulfill his/her commitment due to an emergency, a substitute may be submitted in writing for approval, however this does not guarantee a speaking slot for the substitute.

OSCC MAMPU is calling for submission of OSS Case Studies for the 2009 National OSS Case Study Awards.

This OSS Case Study Awards are open to ALL Public Sector Agencies including Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA) and Polytechnics.

Presentation of the Awards will be held in conjunction with MSC Malaysia Open Source Conference in May 31th to June 3rd 2009.

The Awards are classified into three (3) groups;

Group 1: Public Sector Agencies other than IPTA & Polytechnics;
Group 2: IPTA & Polytechnics; and
Group 3: IPTA & Polytechnics Students.

Submissions of the OSS Case Studies are encouraged for knowledge sharing purpose. Please do not resubmit the OSS Case Studies submitted in 2008.

The best OSS Case Studies will also be eligible for the Final National OSS Case Study Awards 2009 which will be held in conjunction with MyGOSSCON 2009 in November 2009.

The OSS Case Study Awards are for the following solution categories:

Submission Template

A template for submission is provided. It is recommended that the main sections are kept as it is, however additional sub-sections can be added. Submission in Bahasa Malaysia are also accepted provided that they follow the same formats. English is encouraged, as these case
studies will also be used to showcase and share Malaysian OSS implementations to international audiences.

The submission deadline is on 8thMay 2009.

NOTE:Finalists will be able to update their submissions for final national awards in November 2009.

All Public Sector agencies, IPTA/Polytechnics and their students are eligible.

Finalists & Winners
-------------------

Group 1 - 3 finalists will be selected and awarded for each solution category. 1 winner will be selected for each category from the finalists.

Group 2 - 3 finalists will be selected and awarded for all solution categories. 1 winner will be selected for all solution categories from the finalists.

Group 3 - 3 finalists will be selected and awarded for all solution categories. 1 winner will be selected for all solution categories from the finalists.

This will make a total of 15 finalists and 5 winners.

All OSS case study submissions will be compiled and uploaded to OSCC MAMPU's website. Selected case studies may also be compiled into a publication.

We would like to share with you on the following development :-

1. Once again, we wish to extend our sincere appreciation to those participated in our Strategic Thrust (ST) workshops previously and we hope you be able to contribute further.

2. We have created a mailing list, st at lists.oscc.org.my incorporating ST Lead and Participating Agencies names. Please encourage the others to joint this ST community by subscribing to http://lists.oscc.org.my/mailman/listinfo/st and wait for email confirmation. Relevant information with regards to ST will be disseminated through this mailing list.

3. OSS ST Discussion Group (OSTDG) http://knowledge.oscc.org.my/practice-areas/forum/strategic-thrusts now available for all Strategic Thrusts participants, build using our Knowledge Bank http://knowledge.oscc.org.my/

4. The OSTDG http://knowledge.oscc.org.my/practice-areas/forum/strategic-thrusts is open to all ST agencies and anybody interested to participate.

6. OSTDG http://knowledge.oscc.org.my/practice-areas/forum/strategic-thrusts objective is to enable the ST Lead and Participating agencies to virtually communicate and discuss respective ST action plans and activities. This would create an avenue for us to be better prepared for the next ST Workshop and other events.

7. OSCC is the moderator for the OSTDG http://knowledge.oscc.org.my/practice-areas/forum/strategic-thrusts and we will keep on contributing materials for discussion.

8. There are 4 ST discussion groups created as follows:

a. ST3 - Train and Develop Human Resources to Support OSS Implementation. Lead Agency is MOE. Participating Agencies are INTAN, IPTA, MLVK, MOHE and MOHR.

b. ST4 - Promote Creativity and Innovativeness via R&D to Harness Competitiveness. Lead Agency is MOHE & MOSTI. Participating Agencies are IPTA, MDeC and MIMOS.

c. ST6 - Provide Incentives to Prosper the Development of OSS Solutions. Lead Agencies is MAMPU. Participating agencies are MOSTI, EPU and JPA.

d. ST8 - Optimize Resources by Encouraging Smart Partnership with Relevant Organization. Lead Agency is MOSTI. Participating agencies are MOE, MOHE, IPTA, MDeC, MAVCAP, MIMOS.
